Speaker: Louis Katz, MD

Dr. Katz completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and is board certified in both disciplines. He practiced clinical infectious diseases at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport and was the Hospital Epidemiologist until July 2009. Dr. Katz is an adjunct clinical professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Roy and Lucille Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. In the early 1980s, as HIV was recognized as an issue for transfusion medicine, he was asked to serve as a consultant at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center headquartered in Davenport, IA and serving 80 hospitals in four states. He was subsequently medical director and Executive Vice President through Sept. 2012, until taking his current position as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at America’s Blood Centers in Washington DC. Dr Katz is a past and the current chair of the AABB Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Committee, twice served on the FDA’s Blood Products Advisory Committee including a term as its chair among, and is a past president of America’s Blood Centers.
